Turnip Fries

Now  Now that Canadian Thanksgiving is over it is time to cut back on the calorie intake and try to drop a few pounds. At least until American Thanksgiving and all those pre-Christmas parties, and Christmas itself and then New Years and...then comes diet season all over again.

I decided to start back to counting my points. Turnip has zero points, whereas potato has anywhere from 3 to 5 points depending on the size, so when you want to have some fries, preheat your oven and think turnip as a healthy alternative.

Prep is just like oven potato fries. Preheat oven to 400 F. Peel. Wash. Cut into strips.

Place some parchment paper on a cooking sheet or a large rectangular dish, and lightly spray with cooking spray, which has zero points. If you don’t have parchment paper just spray the pan directly.


Arrange the fries in your pan, sprinkle with your favourite seasoning, and then spray with your cooking spray again. I used just salt and pepper on these, but I have used Old Bay Seasoning, a no salt seasoning mix, and cinnamon with a little salt, and all have been different but equally good. I’m thinking pepper and savoury would be awesome! Try out your favourite combo.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, depending on how thick your fries were. Check doneness using the taste test. They won’t get really crispy, but neither does potato fries in the oven unless you add some sort of oil. If they aren’t done to your liking when you taste, leave them in for another 5 minutes and taste again.


If you skin your chicken leg and use a 1 point breading mix, this whole supper is 5 points. That leaves enough points for a bedtime snack! Cheers!
