Dollarama Must Have for Quilters!!

Hello all!

It's a beautiful day in Eastport. Sunny and warm, although very windy. Let's hope the wind dies down for the recreational fishery tomorrow.

Today I'm going to tell you about my Dollarama find...a cutting mat! Yes you read it correctly. It's only small...around 7" by 10" and it is marked out in centimeters (as it should be in Canada even though most of us quilters use inches!), but it was only $4.

I was in the crafter's section looking for popsicle sticks for Karl when I spied it. $4, so I thought why not try it. It's amazing. The quality seems to be every bit as good as my expensive brand name mats. (No name on this one!) I bought it to use to cut little pieces at the kitchen table when I am watching tv or cooking. It came with a little crafter's cutting knife. If anyone wants it let me know! I'm only interested in the mat!

Lunch time I was frying fish cakes. The last of my frozen ones from last year.

After reading the debate on one of my Facebook Newfoundland cooking sites, I decided to try cooking from frozen. I usually thaw them, but it looks like they are going to turn out well. When I make the next batch I'm going to try to remember to write a blog, so I'll let you know.

Anyway,  back to the mat. I was cutting while listening to the fish cakes fry. I trimmed 20  4 1/2" squares, with absolutely no visible effect on the cutting mat.

I've just changed my trimming behaviour! No more dragging the large mat from my sewing room when I want to trim some small pieces elsewhere while I am multitasking. Yeah!!

If you are wondering what I'm doing with the 4 1/2 ' squares, they are 20 of 120 I am sewing using string piecing for the Hunter's Star String Quilt. I already have 120 neutral string blocks and 240 star blocks sewn. I'm using up a lot of neutral and red scraps. I'll post a photo when the top has been completed. The photo below is from the Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville site. Have a great day!
