Reversible Fall Placemat Tutorial - Part 2

Last time I posted I took you up to the end of the first cut. Now we sew. The order of sewing is really quite simple as long as you keep your fabric bundles pinned together and don't let them get mixed up.


First take the top strip from each bundle and sew them in order ABCDE







I typically don't pin at this stage but I do use my quarter inch foot on my sewing machine.







When these are sewn, iron all the seams one way. I chose towards the biggest strip of fabric. 

Then take the second strip (now on top) from each bundle and sew that placemat. Keep sewing and ironing until you have 4 rectangles.

 They should be ordered like this!

 And they should look like this!

Now back to the cutting board. Stack with colour 1 as the top and bottom piece of the top rectangle, colour 2 as the top and bottom of the second rectangle, colour 3 next, and colour 4 as the top and bottom of the rectangular on the bottom of your pile.

Pin the rectangles together on the left side. Note that mine are not in the correct colour order in the picture. Sorry!



If your rectangles aren't all nicely lined up at the other end, don't worry. It would be best if you trimmed them to the same size now, but I admit that I don't always do that. If you are an experienced sewer you can usually make the allowances on the pinning later, but I'd still recommend the trimming and am going to try to take my own advice next time!

Now we have to cut and stack again, and you do exactly like you did last time, except this time the cuts are vertical. So you cut a 3 1/2 inch strip, two 2 1/2 inch strips, another 3 1/2 inch strip, and leave the rest. Then the first and last columns are left as is, in column 2 you move the top strip to the bottom. In column 3 you move the top 2 strips to the bottom, and in column 4 you move the bottom strip to the top. Pin your columns together and make sure you know which is column 1, which is column 2 and so on!! Perhaps stick a label on the head of your pin. Next step will be more sewing.

Partridgeberry Scones

There is nothing in the world as good as a partridgeberry. AKA lingonberries if you are from Scandinavia. They grow wild here in Newfoundland and at this time of year we take to the woods to get our winter supply. I have to admit I haven't picked any yet this year. My 81-year-old father picked 3 gallons for me! Aren't they beautiful! If you aren't lucky enough to have your own supply of these in your back yard, you can substitute cranberries in the recipe. The scones won't be as good, but you work with what you've got right? Scones are pretty forgiving when you are making them, and they allow for lots of substitutions, which I will get to as I go along. Copycat Mary Brown's Chicken Wings in the Actifryer

It has been months since I have posted. Life happens! Other than my granddaughter growing so quickly, not a lot else is new on the people front. On the personal front, Karl gifted me with a longarm sewing machine a couple of weeks ago. It's for my birthday and Christmas and next year's birthday and Christmas and...lol. It's all put together but I haven't started her up yet! A little daunting! (Why is a sewing machine a female?) I'll post a picture of my first completed project when I take the plunge and thread the needle! While the calendar says summer, the temperature doesn't. We've had a few nice 'seasonal' days, but today isn't one of them. I thought I'd make comfort cold weather food for supper, which in this case is copycat Mary Brown's chicken wings in the Actifryer.
