Reversible Fall Placemat Tutorial - Part 4

This is what the reverse side of the first placemat will look like. Now to tell you how to get there! I'm using a 10" half-hexi ruler template here, and I will use the 5" half-hexi for the next 3 placemats. These are available from most quilting stores. If you are near me, you can certainly borrow mine!
First off, Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company has a great tutorial on how to make pumpkins, and she will explain it much better than I will, so go here:

When Jenny explains she doesn't really show how to line up the pieces. See in my picture I touch the corner of my hexi with the edge of the brown piece just before it straightens.

On the other end you will have a quarter inch gap. That disappears when you press.

Magic! Don't worry if your edges aren't perfectly straight. You can trim them off even with the edge of your hexi later.

After you sew on one edge of the middle strip you have to be careful lining up the other strip. I put my pins in a quarter inch up (to allow for the seam allowance), lined the edge up with the bottom piece, and then carefully flipped and pinned.

Now you have a pumpkin!

I'm making a placemat that will be the reverse of the ones I made yesterday, so I have to use one of them as my measuring guide. The height of my finished side is 14 7/8. My pumpkin is 10 5/8, so I need to add on 4 1/4. Yours may vary slightly from mine, so I'm showing you how I did the math.

I have to put a stem on the pumpkin, so I don't want to centre it. I'm going to place it 13/4 from the bottom, which leaves me 2 1/2 at the top. I can't forget my seam allowance, which adds half and inch when you take in both pieces of fabric, so my top will be 3" wide and my bottom will be 2 1/4" wide. The pumpkin is 10" across, so my strips will be 10" long.

I use the same process to decide that when I centre my pumpkin horizontally I need 5" strips on either side. All that's left now is the stem. I'm going to put that in a separate tutorial called Easy Appliqué! I'll post it immediately after this post.
